• Summer League: Complete Coverage
The 20th year of NBA summer hoops in Las Vegas continues with an eight-game slate featuring a slew of picks from the 2024 NBA Draft. Here’s a look at the players who shined brightest on Friday:
DJ Steward, Chicago Bulls
Steward racked up one of Friday’s top scores at 37 points, notably shooting 8-for-13 from 3-point range … and connecting on the game-winner in overtime of the Bulls’ 103-99 victory. Averaging 19.3 points through four games in Las Vegas, Steward has connected on 41.7% of his 3s (6.0 attempts per game) and 49.1% overall.
Dmytro Skapintsev, New York Knicks
The Knicks made most of their noise in the trade market this summer, but the 7-foot-1 Skapintsev is proving to be a developmental project that could pay off in frontcourt depth. The Ukranianian big has spent a pair of seasons with the Westchester Knicks, maintaining efficiency through a role increase, and dropped 17 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and three blocks on the Pistons in a 91-90 victory on Friday.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Dallas Mavericks
The No. 24 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Prosper played only 8.4 minutes across 40 games in his rookie campaign. But he’s been taking advantage of expanded opportunity in Las Vegas; Friday, that meant finishing with 22 points, two rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block with only one turnover in a 101-90 win over the Celtics. Coming off a collective run to the Finals, Prosper’s ascension could keep the Mavs from falling back to the crowded pack.
Kel’el Ware, Miami Heat
The Heat seem to have landed another potential not-quite-lottery contributor, with the erstwhile Indiana center turning in yet another monster line on Friday. This time, Ware dropped a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double that was supplemented by four steals and a block … in 23 minutes(!) Miami rolled right on to a 109-73 wire-to-wire blowout.
Matt Morgan, Charlotte Hornets
The 2023-24 British Basketball League MVP – and a unanimous All-League selection – Cornell product Matt Morgan turned in a flawless shooting performance to cap Friday’s action, nailing all 11 shots (including 7-for-7 from range). The 36 points came in just 23 minutes and provided more than the margin in Charlotte’s 84-68 victory over the Trail Blazers.
