The 20th year of NBA summer hoops in Las Vegas continued on Monday with a six-game slate featuring close encounters and eye-opening performances. Here’s a look at the players who shined brightest:
GG Jackson II, Memphis
After breaking out in the second half of his rookie campaign, GG Jackson II has continued to build on success here in Vegas. Monday night, he racked up 23 points and 11 rebounds on 9-for-19 shooting as the Grizzlies routed the Mavericks from tip to whistle. His inside-out game could cause problems, especially if he’s lined up opposite second units in a bench role.
Bobi Klintman, Detroit
The Pistons’ second-round pick (No. 37 overall), the 6-foot-9 forward delivered 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting against the Rockets, including 4-for-8 from 3. Though he fumbled four turnovers, Klintman pulled down nine rebounds while dishing out three assists. Klintman recently earned a two-year guarantee to start the season on Detroit’s roster, so development will be expected at the league level.
Colby Jones, Sacramento
The No. 34 overall pick a season ago, Jones split his rookie run between Sacramento and the G League Stockton Kings, for whom he averaged 19.8 points (.513 FG%; .375 3P%) across 13 games. Jones spent Monday unleashing the lessons learned, connecting on 10 of his 21 attempts and picking off three steals at the other end. The Kings cruised and Jones showed he the potential to hit the floor running with the high-octane Kings offense.
Kel’el Ware, Miami
The 7-footer, whom the Heat tabbed with the final lottery pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, has quickly shown two-way talent. Ware finished the Heat’s 102-73 victory with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, adding in a steal and block to boot. Though he shot 1-for-2 from deep, the rest of Ware’s makes all came in the painted area, albeit many with potentially momentum-swinging force.
Donovan Clingan, Trail Blazers
Drafted No. 7 overall out of UConn, Clingan’s draft profile projected defense ahead of his offense, and that’s borne out through the early summer returns. Chipping in only eight points on 4-for-11 shooting (36.4%), the 7-foot-2 center stuffed the rest of his stat line, adding a game-high 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. His play seems likely to provide the Blazers optionality in a crowded frontcourt, and a stiffer spine to their interior defense.
