Pre-Draft Outlook
Multiple reports indicate Memphis might be looking to shop the No. 9 pick. That makes sense as the club returns a strong core capable of contending in the West after utilizing more than 30 players in 2023-24 due to a rash of injuries. The missed games turned into a blessing in disguise as the Grizzlies developed gems in GG Jackson, the 45th pick of the 2023 Draft and an All-NBA Rookie Second Team selection, as well as second-year man Vince Williams Jr. We even watched Jaren Jackson Jr. evolve into more of a contributor on the offensive end. In a sense, 2023-24 was a medical redshirt year for the young, talented Grizzlies.
The Way to Go
There’s somewhat of a need in the frontcourt due to the rebounding issues Memphis experienced last season partially due to all the injuries. Although the Grizzlies typically draft the best available player instead of selecting based on need, they could use a big physical presence inside like former center Steven Adams. Such an acquisition is difficult in this draft, which is considered weaker than in years past. That makes it easier to stick with taking the best available player at No. 9, which could be Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham (if he slides) or Connecticut guard Stephon Castle. Prospects such as Cam Christie and Baylor Scheierman are appealing at No. 39.
